About Us

Who we are:

First and foremost we are victim advocates.  Secondly, we are all volunteers.  Not a single person has benefited financially from this website since it's inception.  We are usually in the red, but occasionally break even.

CrimeNews2000 evolved from a group of people who met on the Internet beginning in December 1996.  As you may have guessed by the date, we were drawn to the Internet in our desire to get more information about the JonBenét Ramsey murder case.

Over a period of time, a group of us became serious about researching not only the Ramsey case, but other much less known cases and using the Internet as our tool.  We started posting news updates on a daily basis.  In 2000, probably due to the leap into the new millennium, there was a falling out among friends and a few of us started up our own website, called CrimeNews2000.  As far as I know, we are the only such website still standing.

What we do:

During the time this website has been online there have been several really high profile cases which our readers have followed, such as the Laci Peterson case, the Martha Moxley, Ted Binion and many others.  Some of these cases never seem to go completely away.  We try to follow up on as many of the cases that we have covered, as we possibly can.  The problem is they grow exponentially.  It is a huge job.  Some cases, like several of the serial killer cases start out as individual cases and end up entwined with one another.  We try to keep it all straight for our readers.  We also make a special effort to not just cover the headline cases, but to peruse several newspapers a day to provide links to cases that will never get beyond the local paper.  We feel this is really important.  Like The Office for Victims of Crime says, "Every victim, every time."  It's not possible, but we make an effort.  And it really is about the victims for us.  You will almost NEVER find us giving a perpetrator his "fifteen minutes of shame", as John Walsh calls it.   We respectfully provide thumbnail photos of the victims, when we can, but we never give the perpetrator's image any coverage.

How we do it:

All of the links provided on our pages are manually located, researched for usefulness and content (i.e. not duplicates, etc) and then they are formatted (again manually) and posted to the site by use of a little homemade script. The photos are downloaded, reduced to thumbnail size, optimized and then uploaded.  We also need to answer email, make updates to the website itself as needed and keep an ongoing record of what cases we are covering, and update all of the details of those cases each time we post to them.

Where we are at now:

For several years we had a volunteer crew of up to eight people who helped out on different aspects of the website.  For the past several years, we have had one person do 90% of the news postings, while I looked after the other aspects of operations.  For personal reasons, our news poster is only able to post occasionally now.  From time to time, a few others will provide a link or two, but mostly not.

Where we are heading:

We are hoping to keep this website going.  I wonder sometimes if it is just too antiquated, with the speed that the Internet has changed in ten years.  But then I think of all of the people who love to just drop in, find what they are looking for and be on their way.  I think we provide a good service.  I have not yet thought of an easier way to provide the information that WE provide, and still maintain the succinctness of the information.
