IMPORTANT NOTICE
The information on this page is provided for reference only. Please do not contact or attempt to contact anyone listed. For the most part, those listed are just ordinary persons who have been touched in one way or another by this tragedy. They are not characters in a crime novel; they walk and talk, have families and jobs, love and fear and hurt. I ask you to especially respect the privacy of those most devastated by this tragedy, the family of Laci Peterson. If you feel you must do something, please consider how you can be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Express your condolences or provide your thoughts through one of the many channels that have already been set up: Sign the guestbook at the Laci Peterson web site (www.lacipeterson.com) or contribute to the Laci Peterson Fund, the Laci Peterson Scholarship Fund or one of the groups working to help victims or find the missing, such as the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation or Wings of Protection. The addresses for the Laci Peterson Fund and the Laci Peterson Scholarship Fund are listed on the FAQ page of this site. Thank you.

Thousands of persons have been associated with the Laci Peterson case—family members, friends, associates, law enforcement personnel, volunteers and others. The above list shows persons mentioned in the media or legal proceedings when those persons had direct links to the case. Some persons, particularly members of the Rocha family and the Peterson family, are included for reference even though they have not been included in media accounts.

Not included are individuals who provided man-on-the-street-type opinions; volunteers not personally acquainted with members of the Rocha family or the Peterson family, unless identified as neighbors of Scott and Laci Peterson; and news, entertainment, legal and other nationally recognized personalities who made their reputations prior to this case but who had no direct contact with the Rocha family, the Peterson family, or key witnesses, even though many of these personalities took a special interest in the case. Many of these persons are included in Others.

The purpose of this list is to provide an easy reference to the personalities in the case. For example, if one reads about "Susan Caudillo" but cannot place who she is, this list provides a brief summary of her connection to the case. For individuals whose relationship to Scott and Laci Peterson is strong or whose appearances in the media have been frequent (e.g., Brent Rocha), little additional information is provided; for persons who were mentioned only infrequently in the media, a greater explanation of their relationship to the case may be provided.

References to "the Rocha family" and "the Peterson family" typically refer to all persons listed in those categories, or at least those speaking for the family, and not necessarily those having the same last name (e.g., Laci Peterson is not considered part of the Peterson family). Although here listed as a member of The Immediate Family, for purposes of the Laci Peterson investigation and murder trial, Scott Peterson is considered a member of the Peterson family.

All ages are as of the individual's first found mention in the media related to the case or the date added to this list, and may vary at this time by two years from the person's true age. Unless stated otherwise, local geographical references are to the city of Modesto, and towns and cities are in the state of California. All times are Pacific Standard Time/Pacific Daylight Time unless otherwise noted. Times and actions are as reported in the media by various parties and may or not be as events actually occurred.

Although some individuals could reasonably fall into more than one category (for example, many of Laci Peterson's friends are also volunteers and neighbors), they are listed as they were most typically referred to in media accounts. An anonymous person could possibly be one of the other persons listed, including another anonymous person (e.g., "The Suspicious Man A" as seen through the prosecution's eyes could also be "The Satanist A" according to one early theory by Scott Peterson's defense attorneys). Although many anonymous persons are listed, there are many others not listed; those not listed often simply provided commentary on the case or the persons involved but chose to remain nameless (e.g., "a source close to the case"). If a person's first or last name cannot reasonably be verified, that person will be listed under The Anonymous and Unidentified regardless of their connection to the case. Also, there are a few fictional characters in The Fictional Characters and Aliases who do not have complete known names.

If witnesses are law officers or government employees who testified because of their part in the investigation, then they are listed in the appropriate category. If witnesses are independent or employed by a branch of government that did not investigate the case, then they are listed under The Other Investigators and Experts category. For example, Cyril Wecht, although he is coroner of Allegheny County in Pennsylvania, and has been hired by the defense team, is included in The Other Investigators and Experts category (Allegheny County did not investigate the case), but Sandy Jagoda, Contra Costa County coroner's assistant, is included in The Local Politicians and Government Managers and Their Employees category. In many counties, there are no lines between sheriff and coroner; in such cases, persons were put into a category based on their involvement in the case.

As an aid to searches, names believed to have been listed incorrectly in the media will have an "alternately referred to as" statement followed by any alternate listings. In cases where reasonable doubt exists about the correct spelling, the listing will have a "frequently referred to as" or "also referred to as" statement.
